FandomsNews got the chance to Interview Melissa Landers, the author of the new YA Sci-fi romance novel Alienated.
Alienated is Melissa’s debut novel and let me tell you, it is a VERY good book and all you alien lovers out there will adore this novel! The second book, Invaded comes February 3rd, 2015.
Melissa Landers writes light, witty sci-fi for teens and the young at heart. Look for her ALIENATED series coming in early 2014 from Disney Hyperion.
Additionally, she writes contemporary romance for adults under the name Macy Beckett.
What inspired you to write Alienated?
It was October of 2009 and I was preparing for NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month). While brainstorming story ideas, several plots came to me, but I dismissed them because they were boring or had been done before. Then out of nowhere, I thought “What if a teenage girl had to host an alien exchange student?” The rest is history.
Was it difficult to come up with words from a different world/language (L’eihr)?
Nope. Coming up with a few foreign words was the easy part. The other 85,000 words were the REAL challenge.
Was it a challenge writing in duel POV especially when your two main characters are so different from each other?
Not at all. In fact, I find it easier to tell a story from dual points of view than from a single one.
Were you nervous publishing Alienated since it is your first YA novel?
Releasing a book is always nerve-wracking, whether it’s the first or the fifth. It’s hard to let go of something very dear and let strangers (potentially) rip it apart. This is why I don’t read reviews…except for the rare instances when I use the Goodreads 5-star filter. 🙂
How would you react if aliens made contact with us? Would you be apart of HALO?
Noooo! I would be the president of the L’annabes!
Who do you relate to most? Aelyx or Cara?
Probably Cara, though I can relate to Aelyx as well. I think we’ve all been in a position where we’ve felt out of place.
What actors would you fancast for your main characters if Alienated was ever turned into a film?
I would cast Emma Stone as Cara and a younger version of Steven Strait as Aelyx.
What books would you recommend to readers who loved Alienated?
Fans of ALIENATED are usually fans of Jennifer Armentrout’s Lux series.
Who is your favorite author and do you have a favorite book?
Sorry, but that would be like asking me to pick my favorite child. The answer changes daily. 🙂
Do you have any advice for young writers?
My best advice is to be patient and prepare to work hard…for a long time. You wouldn’t strap on a pair of ice skates and wobble onto the rink for the very first time, then expect to make the Olympic team, right? And yet people write a book (or five) and expect to get published. It doesn’t work that way. Publishing a book isn’t easy. It isn’t SUPPOSED to be easy. Take your time, hone your craft, and never stop writing new material. You’ll grow with each book.
Thank you Melissa for doing the interview, we loved your answers!

Summery to Alienated:
Two years ago, the aliens made contact. Now Cara Sweeney is going to be sharing a bathroom with one of them.
Handpicked to host the first-ever L’eihr exchange student, Cara thinks her future is set. Not only does she get a free ride to her dream college, she’ll have inside information about the mysterious L’eihrs that every journalist would kill for. Cara’s blog following is about to skyrocket.
Still, Cara isn’t sure what to think when she meets Aelyx. Humans and L’eihrs have nearly identical DNA, but cold, infuriatingly brilliant Aelyx couldn’t seem more alien. She’s certain about one thing, though: no human boy is this good-looking.
But when Cara’s classmates get swept up by anti-L’eihr paranoia, Midtown High School suddenly isn’t safe anymore. Threatening notes appear in Cara’s locker, and a police officer has to escort her and Aelyx to class.
Cara finds support in the last person she expected. She realizes that Aelyx isn’t just her only friend; she’s fallen hard for him. But Aelyx has been hiding the truth about the purpose of his exchange, and its potentially deadly consequences. Soon Cara will be in for the fight of her life—not just for herself and the boy she loves, but for the future of her planet.
